School Administrators Challenge State Board of Education Actions
(Jefferson City, MO) This morning Duane Martin of EdCounsel LLC, provided a letter to the Missouri State Board of Education on behalf of his clients and the taxpayers of the State of Missouri, to note, “… that any attempts taken today to seat additional or alternative members of the State Board of Education, or any discussion regarding the seating or appointment a new or additional Board member, will constitute a purposeful violation of the Missouri Sunshine Law.”
The Missouri Association of School Administrators (MASA) delivered the letter to State Board of Education President, Charles W. Shields prior to the Board meeting that is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. today (Nov. 21, 2017).
MASA Executive Director, Dr. Doug Hayter, stated, “Just as we do with our school boards, we expect the State Board of Education to strictly abide by the Sunshine Law; not doing so calls into question any potential motives or actions taking during this meeting.”
Members of MASA, along with many others who value public education, are deeply disturbed that the actions of the Governor are potentially unconstitutional and unnecessarily create a State Board of Education that is highly politicized. The State Board of Education is, by law, designed to be independent by nature.
